Volodar Murzin awarded by Matteo Zoldan
at the 8th Salento International Chess Open 2019
Big surprise at the World Rapid Chess Championship 2024 which ended tonight in New York, in the Wall Street district.
Having put aside (for now) the issue regarding Carlsen’s disqualification for the dress code, the victory in the tournament went to the eighteen year old Russian Volodar Murzin, number 59 on the scoreboard. Murzin finished at 10/13, undefeated, and over the three days of competition he defeated the likes of Caruana, Nakamura, Duda and Praggnanandhaa.
If memory serves (it’s been 14 editions now…) I think it was the year 2019, and on the occasion of the Salento International Chess Open it seems that, without yet knowing it, it awarded a future FIDE world champion…
Congratulations Volodar Murzin, well done!
